How to be a Better Listener

Some people are simply good listeners, while others need to put in considerable effort. To listen to people nowadays is no small feat, especially because of our tendency to multitask. But, why don’t we try something different? After the break, you can find few techniques that will improve your communication.

While conversing with another person, try to concentrate on them and on what they are trying to tell you. Keep eye-to-eye contact and don’t let your eyes (and mind) wander, demonstrating that you are strongly interested in hearing what the person across you is saying.

Let the people involved in the conversation know that you are listening and understanding their every word by nodding and smiling occasionally, even when you don’t agree with what is being said. The most important thing is to focus your attention on the people that are talking.

In order to show attention, you need to ask questions. Keep busy with the details the person across you is saying and make inquiries, especially if there’s something you don’t understand or if the opinion presented is different than yours. People find that kind of thing important, because it shows that you are genuinely interested and really paying attention.
